Examining the Influence of Hospital Accreditation Standards on Nursing Performance: A Literature Review

Hospital accreditation has become an important strategy for improving healthcare quality and strengthening patient safety systems. Nurses play a critical role in implementing accreditation standards because they represent the largest group of healthcare professionals and provide continuous patient care. This study aims to examine the influence of hospital accreditation standards on nursing performance through a comprehensive literature review. A systematic search was conducted across major academic databases, including Scopus, Emerald Insight, and Web of Science, focusing on peer-reviewed articles published between 2019 and 2025. The selection process followed predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure the relevance and methodological rigour of the studies. From the initial pool of identified articles, 18 studies were selected and analyzed using a narrative synthesis. The findings indicate that implementing hospital accreditation standards significantly improves nursing performance across several key areas, including adherence to clinical guidelines, documentation accuracy, patient safety practices, teamwork, and professional accountability. In addition, accreditation processes encourage continuous quality improvement and support nurses' professional development through training and competency enhancement. However, several studies also report challenges related to increased administrative workload and documentation requirements during accreditation implementation. Overall, the evidence suggests that accreditation can be an effective institutional mechanism for strengthening nursing practice and enhancing healthcare service quality when supported by adequate organizational resources and leadership commitment.
